What is the TCU catchphrase? ›

At more than 100 years old, “Riff Ram” is rumored to be the oldest chant in the Southwest Conference, where we rose to popularity in the early days of intercollegiate sports. Riff, Ram, Bah, Zoo!

How Did TCU Become the Horned Frogs? The answer goes way back to 1897, when the yearbook staff of the then-named AddRan Christian University was looking to name its annual. Football began at the university the year before, and legend has it that the football field was covered in the small-but-mighty horned lizards.

From 1998 to 2006, TCU has attended 8 bowl games, winning five of them. The record of TCU in bowl games as of 2006 is 9–13–1. TCU also claims two national championships from 1935 and 1938. TCU has 41 1st team All-Americans, listed at TCU Horned Frogs football.

According to TCU's website, The Horned Frog was the name of the university's 1886 yearbook. It seems the name stuck after that. The TCU library still has editions of The Horned Frog Yearbook dating back to 1905. Allegedly, the football field was infested with horned lizards in the team's early years.

The Horned Frog (actually a lizard) has been TCU's mascot longer than TCU has been the university's name. Four students helped make the decision in 1897, when AddRan Christian University (renamed TCU in 1902) was located in Waco.

The University uses two special horned frog depictions as additional visual identifiers for TCU: the signature University Frog and the Athletic Frog. Horned frogs are spiked, heavily armored and fiercely territorial. The Texas horned lizard is the state reptile of Texas.

TCU remains in a “covenant” with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), according to the TCU website. “This continued relationship supports an approach to education that values scholarship, reason and intellectual inquiry while honoring the importance of every individual's religious identity.

In 1897-98, the school's first yearbook was named The Horned Frog—after the small but fierce lizard that was embraced as the school mascot. Students chose school colors: “Purple for royalty, white for a clean game.” We officially became Texas Christian University in 1902.

It was there that the school received its first charter as AddRan Male and Female College in 1874. It was later chartered in 1889 as AddRan Christian College under the official control of the Christian (Disciples of Christ) Church.

TCU has enjoyed only one winner, Davey O'Brien in 1938, but four other TCU players have been nominated: Sam Baugh '37 at quarterback and punter, Jim Swink '57 at halfback; Kenneth Davis '86 at halfback; and last season, LaDainian Tomlinson at halfback.

The 1938 team was undefeated and was the No. 1 team in the Associated Press Poll. The 2010 team topped the Congrove Computer Rankings, though the school does not claim this title.

'Riff Ram Bah Zoo' may sound more like a Dr. Seuss poem than a rallying cry, but it is a beloved tradition for the Frogs. Give 'em Hell, TCU. According to TCU, it's the oldest cheer in the Southwest conference, the university's original athletic conference.

The tradition dates to the 1920s, when the song was first written and introduced to the TCU fan base. The lyrics are mostly nonsense — “Riff, Ram, Bah, Zoo/Lickety, Lickety, Zoo Zoo/Who, Wah, Wah, Who/Give 'em Hell, TCU!” But the song always excites the TCU fan base.
